Ypres 1918 – 2018 – All Systems Go!
It may seem a long way off at the moment, but anyone who’s been within shelling distance of Ypres in the last few years will realise that the famous old Belgian city will be packed to the Cloth Hall rafters for the 100th anniversary of the Armistice in November 2018.
With this in mind, plans are already in hand for the group’s trip in that year – and this time round, we’re going all Lonely Planet and planning our own independent trip, away from the confines of the Leger coach and it’s seemingly never-ending round of drop-offs in Kent and greater London.
We’ve already secured rooms for six people in the Gasthof ‘tZweerd in the Grote Markt, a nice family establishment where we’ve often eaten on previous visits to Ypres.
The plan is to travel to London by train early on the Friday, then head to Brussels on the Eurostar from St Pancras, followed by a local train to Ypres.
Saturday we’ll be hoping to recruit a local guide to take us round some of the Flanders fields battlefields, while Sunday, November 11 will be spent in Ypres itself, where there will no doubt be special celebrations taking place to mark the century since the end of the Great War.
